Project Title: Gum Marom (Equal Opportunity in Acholi)
Location: Gulu District, Uganda
Primary Local Partner: The Youth Coalition for Peace (YCFP)
Other Partners:
We’ve successfully completed our pilot project and are currently building the plans for a comprehensive project expansion. Please read this project report to learn about the activities completed, the impact had and the lessons we’ve learned.
View the plan for the activities scheduled for this year, here: Gum Marom Phase II_2010_OA
OA Projects and the YCFP have designed the project to involve youth from all backgrounds (without any discrimination based on their level of involvement with the conflict) and with five main aims in mind. These aims are:
1. To increase access, for war-affected youth, to local youth leaders and to discussions about community-building;
2. To increase opportunities for war-affected youth to play soccer in a community-building manner;
3. To increase the capacity and outreach of local youth leaders and community-building groups;
4. To enable female youth to be more actively involved in community-building activities; and,
5. To improve local infrastructure needed for engaging war-affected youth in soccer-based community building activities.
Have a look at some of the video journals posted during our pilot project and stay tuned for a few longer videos about the some of the individuals from Gulu who are involved in the project.
How to help:
Tell people about the project and the needs of youth in northern Uganda; organize an event to raise funds or awareness, or both; encourage people to follow the blog during the project; or, donate or buy a soccer ball by buying a 1 for 1 t-shirt at the OA Shop, which donates a soccer ball to local peacebuilding program in Gulu.

Change.org has done our homework for us and compiled a list of resources on northern Uganda:
The SWAY report also gives great insight into the current situation, for youth, in northern Uganda. You can find it here: Survey on War Affected Youth in northern Uganda
Fact: Did you know that most of the OA projects team was 4 when the war in northern Uganda started and 23 when the ceasefire was signed?
That means everyone our age or younger in Gulu has never really known peace.
